The fashion world is finally taking on the common challenges concerning the environment and climate change. To our T.ba and Dreaming Habits friends, we would like to share what makes us a conscious and sustainable brand.
The UN has 17 Sustainable Development goals. The goals include topics such as ending poverty and climate action. The UN is asking the fashion industry’s help to achieve them, and as a responsible brand, T.ba is already working towards these goals.
Fashion can be part of the solution
As a consumer you also have a choice. You can choose to buy clothes from the fast-fashion chains such as Zara and H&M. Fast fashion brands don’t make clothes to last for a life time. But they take looks from the runways and produce similar looks quickly to instantly meet consumers’ desires. Therefore, the clothes are also made in synthetic materials. Usually, they are thrown away after a short while.
Or you can buy clothes that you know you will love and use for a lifetime, made by small brands who have also made the clothes based on a genuine inspiration and creativity.
Family brand
T.ba is a family brand. The creative designer is Mercedes Lopez de Carrizosa who was the founder of T.ba. Her husband Gonzalo Prado is the CEO. Late 2019, they were joined with their daughter Sol Prado who has been working for other fashion houses, but has now come to work with the family.
In all, the brand has no more than 40 employees. “We all know each other very well. The wellbeing of all employees is important to me”, Mercedes says and continues: “All contribute with their skills and creativity into making T.ba what it is. For example, our accessory designer used to come here as a cleaner. Now, she is making some of the accessories and she is really an artist! T.ba has really unleashed her creative talent.”
Hand-made in Spain
The clothes are made just outside Toledo because there is where Mercedes found the perfect team for her to work with: Highly skilled craftspeople make the individual pieces. It is a careful manufacturing process as clothes and shoes have always been made per traditional tailoring. For example, boots and booties are stitched, never glued.
T.ba uses Spanish wool and materials, carefully refined by local artisans and family businesses following their own heritage. Every time, T.ba and Dreaming Habits prefers natural fabrics and environmental friendly dying and production methods. “We are proud of the quality of the clothes we make. We would never settle with something we didn’t think would work. For example, if we are looking for a special feeling or look of the material, I go out of my way to find it. Or have it especially made”, Mercedes says.
She continues: “I never make many items of the same model. Of a coat, maybe six or seven. And the tweed jackets are always distinct. You should be safe that you will not show up with the same jacket as someone else at a hunt or event.” Details such as buttons and embellishments are also made in-house or on order. This makes each item unique.
